Wednesday (March 12) - All day in Cuenca

Walking around downtown today -- we let our driver loose so that we could enjoy the city. The weather was again pleasant, sunny and cool, with our only rain late in the day. In brief:
  • At the beginning of our walk to the Tomebamba River, we dropped off our laundry (13 pounds for $6.50!)
  • Walk along Tomebamba River - gorgeous buildings and flowers (photos coming)
  • Taxi ride from hell, then Artesa - Our taxi driver had no clue how to get to Artesa, a ceramics production place that had beautiful, local designed ceramics for low cost; Roger saved the day, as did Ashley's GPS. We loaded up on neat dishes and bowls most of which eventually made it through the trip home in our suitcases. They are now our primary dishes.
  •  Lunch at ribs place -- great almuerzo -- then shopped
  •  Exploring around San Blas Plaza; neighborhoods of auto shops and furniture stores, ice cream pigeons
  • Thunderstorms
  •  Ashley plays fiddle with Roger
  • Jazz club of Ecuador with our group -- good music, entertainment and food. I asked my table neighbor what got him to Cuenca from Canada. He had been downsized and described himself as an "economic refugee." He had been in country 10 months, lived extremely cheaply, and  couldn't say enough good about the free or low-cost cultural events in Cuenca.
I expect to revise this post once I have photos, and recollections from Carolyn and Ashley.
